Several of our Chemistry pupils from Upper and Lower Sixth Form recently participated in the Chemistry Olympiad 2021, run by the Royal Society of Chemistry, and achieved some fantastic results.
Open to all secondary schools and colleges across the UK, the competition is exceptionally challenging, and is designed to allow students to develop critical problem-solving skills, learn to think more creatively and, of course, test their knowledge of chemistry in new, real-world scenarios.
More than 7,000 students from across the country participated in the Olympiad this year, the first round of which is comprised of a written paper taken at school under exam conditions. Questions are intended to be tough and are aimed at students in their final year of schooling before they move on to higher education.
The Uppingham pupils who participated did especially well in the Chemistry Olympiad this year, and we are very proud of their achievements and hard work.
Leo Liu and Cici Wang both achieved Gold medals in the Olympiad, meaning that they scored within the top 8.9% of participants.
William Barbrook, Horatio Everett, Natalie Chu and Nathan Yuen all achieved Silver medals, alongside Augustus Cho who was awarded a Bronze medal.
Michael Wettasinghe and Eddie Jiang also did well in the competition, and all participants and teachers were congratulated by the Education Executive for the Royal Society of Chemistry for their outstanding achievements, particularly in such a challenging year.
Mr King, Head of Science and Chemistry at Uppingham, also praised the students, acknowledging that “it is the toughest of the tough in terms of its challenging nature, which makes it even more special how so many have done so well.”
We warmly congratulate all Uppingham pupils who participated in the Chemistry Olympiad this year for their great results.
