Netball demands teamwork, leadership, physical and mental dexterity. We support our pupils to stretch themselves and to compete with passion at all levels.
Netball is a popular sport at Uppingham, with competitive teams available for girls of all ages. It’s a wonderful sport for developing physical and mental strength, flexibility and coordination, as well as teamwork, problem-solving and leadership skills.
We promote positive values and behaviours in all our training activities and matches. Our approach ensures that all matches, whether inter-house or against other schools, are played in an excellent spirit of sportsmanship, fair play and with a healthy degree of competitiveness.
Netball is played in the spring term, and we have 16 teams playing regularly across all age groups. In the Fourth Form, all girls play competitive netball in one of the six teams. Above this age group, netball is played competitively across all years with ten teams from U15 upwards – demonstrating great depth and variety of skill and ability throughout the school. Pre-season training takes place throughout the Christmas term, for all ages, complemented by a carefully planned strength and conditioning programme.
Our extensive fixture list gives girls of all ages ample opportunities to compete, at all levels. As well as playing for the school, girls are supported to play local club netball for Rutland and Charnwood NC and TFC Leicester NC, and academy netball for Loughborough Lightning.
Coaching
Netball is run by the Director of Netball, Hannah Joseph, who is also a current professional for Loughborough Lightning and England Vitality Roses. A number of Uppingham staff are also accredited coaches, and run regular netball sessions. The school employs external professionals to work with a number of the teams, including coaches from Loughborough Lightning and Loughborough University.
Facilities
There are nine netball courts used for training and matches on the Leicester playing fields. Teams can also use the excellent indoor courts in the USSC.
Competitions
Uppingham School competes in the Midlands Independent School League, and we host our own U15 invitation tournament. Many of our teams have the opportunity to participate in county, regional and national competitions, and Uppingham teams have qualified for the National Schools Netball Finals. All girls have the opportunity to play inter-house netball.
