Uppingham School is pleased to announce that Nick Gandy, an accomplished and experienced sports educator, has been appointed as Director of Sport. He will join the School in 2024.
Within the department, Nick will be supported by three new deputy roles. James Baker has been appointed Deputy Director of Sport: Coach Development; Richard Surtees is the new Deputy Director of Sport: Performance; and Charlie Esson is taking on the role of Deputy Director of Sport: Participation.
Nick Gandy is currently Director of Sport, Head of Rugby and a Housemaster at Framlingham College in Suffolk. Prior to Framlingham, his previous roles include Director of Sport (Hymers College, Bishop Burton College) and Director of Rugby (Northumbria University, Blaydon RFC).
He has been a passionate sportsman throughout his life and is a qualified rugby, golf and cricket coach. His rugby coaching has included England Students, and he has also been the Head Coach of the Independent Schools’ Lambs National U18 XV. At Northumbria University, he won the National Students League and what is now the BUCS Super Rugby Championships, whilst at Blaydon RFC he guided the club into the upper echelons of the league pyramid. He has also coached on the international 7s circuit.
Nick Gandy is a coach who understands the value of inspiring and motivating young people in sport and ensuring that there is a sports programme through which all pupils can achieve their potential.
Nick Gandy said: “I am delighted that I have been appointed in this role at Uppingham School, which is very much my ‘dream job’. Having been able to conquer many challenges and attain great success throughout my career, I am looking forward to embracing the opportunities we have to excel in sport at Uppingham.”
