In celebration of the commencement of the Uppingham Cairo building project, a Groundbreaking Ceremony was held at the site of the new school in New Giza, Egpyt.

The ceremony was led by the British Ambassador to Egypt, His Excellency Gareth Bayley OBE, who – alongside senior officials from the British Embassy’s Division of International Trade – was welcomed by Tamer Tammam, New Era Education Chairman and Founder, and Keith Budge, Vice Chair of Trustees and Chair of the Education Committee at Uppingham School. They were joined by Patrick Mulvihill, International Development Director of Uppingham School UK, and the Board of Directors of New Era Education, Bloom and New Giza.

The ceremony took place on the site of the new campus in New Giza. Uppingham Cairo, a K-12 co-educational school, will open in September 2024.

Developed in collaboration with New Era Education, Bloom and New Giza, Uppingham Cairo will offer its pupils a truly international education, offering both International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma and A levels. Based on the values and ethos of Uppingham UK, Uppingham Cairo will also embrace Egypt’s rich history and culture to bring a school of exceptional quality to meet the increasing demands of aspiring Egyptian families.

The school will be located on a 10-acre site at New Giza, west of Cairo and overlooking the iconic Great Pyramids of Giza. It will boast state-of-the-art teaching and sports facilities, ranking amongst the largest K-12 educational projects in Egypt.

Gareth Bayley, British Ambassador to Egypt, said: “It’s fantastic to be here today to witness the latest stage in the continuing success story of UK education in Egypt. Uppingham is a school with a proud history and a wealth of experience, and I am delighted that they will be bringing both of these to their new school here in Egypt, Uppingham Cairo. I firmly believe that the UK represents Egypt’s number one partner when it comes to education. The demand is there among Egyptian families, and British schools and universities are coming in increasing numbers to bring world-class education to Egypt. I look forward with interest to the opening of the school next year.”

Patrick Mulvihill, International Development Director of Uppingham School UK, said: “We are delighted to see work begin on this project, as it will have many long-term and far-reaching benefits for Uppingham in the UK and around the world. We have every confidence that our partners, New Era Education, will build a superb school which will be true to the values of Uppingham School.”
