We were deeply saddened to hear of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip’s passing, but are honoured to have great memories of him visiting the School. His strength of character, influence and dedication to others, particularly through the Duke of Edinburgh Award, continue to be an inspiration to us all.
The School was privileged to host Prince Philip on two occasions. His first visit to Uppingham was in November 1957, when he officially opened the (then) Science School.
He returned for an official royal visit to the School in November 1984, accompanied by Her Majesty The Queen. The visit commemorated the Quatercentenary of the School’s foundation, and a CCF Guard of Honour - commanded by our own Richard Boston (B 56) – was mounted to greet them on their arrival. After The Queen’s inspection of the Guard, Prince Philip remarked to Richard “where did you hire that lot from?”
On their visit, they went on to tour an exhibition set up in the OSR,which included photos from Prince Philip’s previous visit in 1957. Upon seeing these photos, The Queen was heard saying “Philip, you are wearing the same raincoat that you wore the last time you were here!”
Great memories of an extraordinary man.
