The Headmaster has taken part in one of the 'Tatler Talks Education' podcasts.
Invited by the Tatler Education Editor, Tori Cadogan, Dr Maloney joined Nick Littlehales, a sleep coach who has worked with top and women in football, rugby and cycling, to explore the subject of sleep.
It followed Uppingham’s “digital detox” policy - inspired by eminent ‘sleep scientist’ Professor Matthew Walker’s book Why We Sleep. The initiative aims to help everyone achieve better and healthier sleep – adults and youngsters alike - by reducing exposure to ‘blue light’ which is largely found in electronic screens.
During the podcast, Maloney applauds the community at Uppingham for taking on board the changes. “We have very progressive people... who agree that things should not just be done the way they always have been."
He also broadened the issue beyond Uppingham – where pupils do not have to wake up as early as youngsters who have to travel to their schools. More needs to be done on the working day for schools in general and, despite the challenges, “there are ways of recovering this”, the Headmaster said.
Dr Maloney concludes: "If we get nutrition, exercise and sleep right, then we go a long way to circumventing anxiety."
