As a leading hockey school, Uppingham follows a core set of coaching values that instil enjoyment, confidence, resilience and respect in our pupils.

Uppingham is one of the top hockey playing schools in the country, and the majority of our pupils play the sport.  We field 15 girls’ teams and 16 boys’ teams, and have multiple players involved in the England Player Pathway System.

We create a supportive and enjoyable environment in which pupils are emboldened to play hockey with confidence, to respect themselves and each other, and to work as a team. Competing in hockey develops resilience, and we want pupils to strive to achieve at their best. Above all, we want pupils to enjoy the experience of playing hockey.

Our coaches follow the same core set of principles and values, whether they’re coaching U14s or the 1st XI. Our focus is always on developing the whole person, and our ultimate goal is for pupils to continue playing hockey once they leave school, at whatever level.

Boys and girls play hockey during the autumn and spring terms. There is also the opportunity to train for indoor hockey, and to enter the National Indoor Competition. In addition to many regular training sessions, we offer extra mental and physical training for our scholars and selected players. We also support players who want to make the step into club hockey, through our close links with local clubs.

Coaching

Hockey coaching is led by director of hockey, James Baker, supported by graduate sports assistants and several members of academic staff who are Level 2 qualified hockey coaches. Many other staff have playing experience, ensuring our coaching team is well qualified to assist players in all aspects of their game. Our hockey handbook ensures that player development follows a structured programme as pupils progress through the school.

Facilities

We have fantastic facilities for hockey, with three Astroturf surfaces on the Middle playing fields, two of which are floodlit. Our main pitch is used all year round for hockey, having been upgraded to a top-class synthetic turf.  Plans are in place to upgrade the two other pitches to the same standard.

Competitions

Our girls’ and boys’ teams play in the Independent Schools Hockey League, providing a high level of competition and regular fixtures. Girls and boys also compete in national tournaments and are regularly involved at regional level finals. Uppingham teams have also reached the national finals.

Every three years we run long-haul overseas hockey tours to destinations such as Australia and South Africa. During pre-season or the Easter break, we run tours closer to home, with recent destinations including Germany, Spain and Holland.
